John Kasich has been appointed governor of the state.
John Husted is expected to become governor in the coming days.
Kasich, the son of Republican U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, had served as the state treasurer for seven years before his 2012 run for governor.
He is the first governor in Ohio history to have two full terms as a member of Congress.
He was elected to the U.P. House of Representatives in 2018.
Kessler has served in his current role since the governor was elected in 2019.
House is the state legislature and is controlled by Democrats.
Kasich was the state party’s nominee for president in 2020.
He lost to President Donald Trump in November.
He ran for president as a Republican in 2020, but dropped out after failing to secure enough delegates to qualify for the party’s nomination.
He then ran for governor in 2022.
