The Irish Medical Council (IMC) has called for an investigation into a doctor who was found to have sexually abused a patient at a Dublin hospital.
In a statement on Tuesday, the IMC said a nurse was arrested on suspicion of aggravated indecent assault in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“The IMC is appalled by the allegations made against Dr David Maughan, who has worked in the emergency department of the University of Limerick for the past 20 years,” the statement said.
“The IMG believes that the patient was in a state of distress when the alleged abuse took place and should have been assisted by an experienced medical professional.”
Dr Maughans father, Dr Martin Maughanson, said his son was in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a “sad and painful” situation.
“I think that we’re just waiting for the police to get involved,” Dr Maughons father said.
“It’s a serious matter.
The doctor should be held to account.”
Dr Dermot Dermott, the director of emergency medicine at the University Hospital of Limestone, said Dr Mughans medical record showed he was “a very experienced and professional doctor”.
“I am extremely concerned for the safety of the patient,” he said.
The IMCC has also demanded an investigation by the Department of Health into Dr Mighans alleged abuse.
Dr Mughan, an Irish Medical Association (IMA) board member, is currently on bail pending an extradition hearing.
His barrister, Patrick O’Neill, said there was “no evidence to indicate he is a threat to the public or any other members of the public”.
“He has done nothing wrong,” Mr O’Neil said.
In 2014, Dr Moughans first accused his doctor of raping him when he was 16 years old, but he was cleared of the charges.
The doctor was later jailed for 12 months and later banned from teaching.
Dr Martin Mughanson, who lives in Dublin, said he was concerned about Dr Maugans future after his arrest.
“We’re hoping that there’s an investigation,” he told the Irish Times.
“There is nothing new in this case, there is nothing in the past that suggests that Dr Maghans has been a violent person.
We don’t know whether this is just another one of those things that happened.”
Dr Martin said his daughter had also been raped in the last three years and said she was “very distraught” about the charges brought against her father.
“She has been through a lot of trauma, I can’t speak for her,” he added.
